buy a telescope
I want to buy a telescope for my boyfriend?
First off, I know nothing about telescopes. I know my boyfriend loves astrology and while talking to a friend he mentioned he would love to own a telescope.
I want to get him one for Christmas, but as I said i know nothing about them. I'm not looking to spend an incredible fortune on one, defiantly less than $200
Any suggestions??
Choosing a telescope is a very personal decision, so I strongly recommend that you include your boyfriend in the process, even if it does spoil the surprise a bit. $200 is a very tight budget for a telescope, and you run the strong risk of ending up with a junky kid's toy, unless you choose carefully.

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:
