a good telescope for someone who lives in new york city?
i live in new york city and im interested in astronomy but i cant see the stars because of the light pollution and im not old enough to travel outside of nyc, can somebody recommend a telescope that will allow me to see the stars from my rooftop or something
Initially, I was going to let this go without posting, but it bothered me that you may be misled. Evidently, there are people who posted advocating a Dobsonian mount. For whatever reasons (with which I totally disagree), a Dobsonian is NOT a good beginner scope for EVERYONE. Here are a FEW reasons:
Having lived in an urban area, I would NOT want to try and lug a Dob up a flight(s) of stairs to a roof. Although simple to put together, it is absolutely to cumbersome for an inner-city apartment dweller.
I don’t know if you drive, but there are scopes you can pack in duffel bag type bags and carry them on the mass transit system. NO WAY can you carry a Dobsonian mount scope on the subway or bus.
Most beginners are unfamiliar with the night sky and don’t know where the best targets are for light-polluted areas much less any other sky conditions. Dobsonian scopes are completely manual which means if you want to see it, you use your scope and hunt for it. I’ve seen beginners with Dobs who hunt for a SINGLE TARGET anywhere from 30minutes to an hour before they either find it or simply give up looking. Beginners want to see something wonderful out there; not spend the majority of their time looking for something wonderful to see.
Lastly, with a Dob; if you bump it, you lose it. That is to say that since there is not tracking mechanism on a Dob, if you bump your scope, you will lose your target and have to hunt it down again. The other night I was forced to use a Dob to entertain some young kids. Drove me insane! They would either bump the scope or grab it to see the target I was on. I spent most of the time having to navigate back to the object which in some cases took several minutes depending on how much they had moved the scope.
My advice is to get a pair of binoculars and a sky chart and do some viewing that way before you purchase a telescope. Get a little familiar with the sky first. If you insist upon buying a scope, look for a Newtonian reflector with goto capability. Be careful what you buy and from where you purchase it b/c there are a lot of sub-standard scopes out there. Especially if you are going to be on a roof b/c the wind gets pretty gusty up there and if you don’t have a good, solid tripod and mount the wind will cause the scope to shake and ruin your viewing experience. Admittedly, a Dob would not be as susceptible to wind gusts, but again, I would not want to carry a Dob up and down stairs or even in an elevator for that matter. The other thing is that living in an apartment in NYC, you may not have the room for a Dob.

How should i get into star gazing/ astronomy?
For sometime now ive been wanting to do this but when it came time to get things toghter ...it made my head hurt with all this infomation thrown at me. Reflectors,refractors, mm lens, electronic eye pieces, range, all this stuff is making my head spin.what would be a nice easy way to get into star gazing/location before i spend money on a good telescope. where can i get a good star chart for my area and how should i go about doing it? anything is helpful
I used binoculars for two years. In that time, I was able to learn the sky and research and save my money for the type of scope I wanted. Keep in mind that it is a HOBBY for amateurs. The idea is to have FUN with it. Learn those aspects of it that interest you and are enjoyable. Forget the rest.

I read on Wikipedia that in Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring', " A seven-note segment of the C5 interval cycle,?
telescoped into the compass of an octave, divides the octave into 'whole-steps' and 'half-steps', (i.e. octatonic). How is this possible? (before you ask, this is NOT a homework question)
An example of the first 7 notes of a C5 interval cycle:
C F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb
If you put these in ascending order in a single octave:
C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb
You get a pattern of whole- and half-steps, which in this case is equivalent to a Phrygian scale. If you started on the second member (F) of the cycle, and added a pitch (Cb) to form seven, the notes in order would be:
Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb Cb
This gives you a different pattern of whole- and half-steps (cf. Mixolydian) but it's still from the same C5 interval cycle.
