How to collimate a Celestron AstroMaster 114 refractor telescope?


I have a Celestron Astro-Master 114 telescope, but I don't know how to collimate it can someone help me? If it helps, I already collimated it once and I could see, but i didn't do it correctly.

Because this is a Jones-Bird corrected optical system with a spherical short focus mirror, collimation in the normal way of Newtonians is almost impossible. But it can be done if you are careful.
(This first step may not be necessary if your collimation is close, and you can go on to the star test below)
If you are brave, you can remove the lens at the bottom of the focuser tube. Remember which way it came out, so you can put it back the same way.
Now you can use a sighting tube (or a collimating laser) to see down the focuser tube, to the secondary, and to the primary. You should be able to see centered images, along with your own eye.
After everything is centered well, put the lens back in. Now you can refine this rough alignment. Use a bright star that is tracked well by the motorized mount. If you don't have one, use a sun reflection off a glass globe like a lamp over 500 feet away that is on a black background. Center the star and focus carefully with a high power eyelens. You should see concentric rings around the dot. That is the diffraction pattern. If not concentric rings, a flare on one side is the misalignment. Move the scope so that the star moves to the side which shows a better concentric pattern. Now move only the mirror alignment screws to recenter the star. Repeat to get it perfect. These last steps should take only a very small fraction of a turn of one or two screws. Tighten the jam screws on the mirror mount, recheck the pattern.
I have used this routine on my 114GT Celestron Nexstar scope, and I run it at the maximum power of 280X if the sky is perfectly calm.

Astrophotography M31 with rebel xs?


I'm out right now using a 4inch refracter telescope. How should I take a picture of M31? I have a canon rebel XS, got the right utilities (not sure about filters. I have O-IIl and a UHC/LPR) and a for it as well. But what mm eyepiece should I use and how long exposure should I have on it? I've tried 2 mins already but its just a redlike color with 2 stars only.
for taking pictures I use a t-ring and the other thing to put the camera in the eyepiece socket.

The eyepiece you have is irrelevant, unless you are trying to take a photo using your DSLR directly through your eyepiece. I'm not quite clear on how you are set up and what equipment you are using. The reddish-brown color is a result of too much stray light coming into the telescope. If you are in a light-polluted area, taking long exposures is simply out of the question.

I've been breaking into astrophotography for about a year. One thing I've found is that to do it in a way that brings high-quality photos is not going to be cheap. You need a good mount that tracks your target, but does so precisely. There is a technique called “prime focus” (which from your description I assume that is what you are doing) where you attach your DSLR to your telescope using adapters. If you are not “guiding”, then 2 minutes is a bit of a stretch and you’ll probably wind up with stars beginning to trail or look oblong. To avoid that, you need some kind of guiding system on either a wedge or preferably a German Equatorial mount. Just to give you an idea of my "basic" setup:

Celestron CGEM mount
William Optics 110 APO Megrez
Orion Starshoot CCD camera (for guiding)
Orion 80 ShortTube (for guiding)
Canon Xsi DSLR

That's just a base setup which doesn't include other little odds-and-ends that you need to get yourself going and does not include a laptop (which I already had). You’ll also need software to process the images.

There is no CHEAP way to do real astrophotography. And there are no shortcuts; it takes a long time to learn how to do it right and it takes money. I'm still eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner b/c after buying all this stuff, it's all I can afford to eat.

Take your time and do some research into what it takes to do astrophotography. Two things you need are patience and funding. Research, research, research before you buy anything! Once you've bought it, more than likely you are stuck with it. You want to make sure you get WHAT YOU NEED to accomplish WHAT YOU WANT to do. It took me OVER a year to acquire all the equipment I needed b/c of the cost. For me, it was about $6000.

I have a new telescope?


It is a Busnell, it came with a decent tripod, 2x barlow lens, 4mm, 8mm, 12.5mm lens. I was looking at Jupiter with the 2x barlow and 4mm lens, every time I tried to focus in on it the telescope moved and threw of my object. Seems to me if I wanted a telescope to see even further I would have to get a better tripod. Does anyone know what I can do to see further with better stability. it is a refractor telescope, I paid 350.00 canadian for it.
What kind of view can I get of jupiter? With my max lens on I have to reposition my scope every 10 seconds that is annoying, and all I can see of jupiter is about the size of a pea and a tiny little ring. What kind of money would I have to spend to get a close up so I can see the colors and more details. Can I get a bigger field lens or is that built into the telescope? It is alot nicer viewing with just the 8mm on as far as just looking at it for awhile.

1. Don't try to look at objects under such high magnification. You need to get to know an object under lower mag first. That way you appreciate what you see even more. Instead of "I can't see the Mars Pathfinder at 300X", you'll say "I can see even more at 100X than I could at 50X".

2. At high mag, you'll probably get a degraded image anyway, because you're magnifying by several hundred times not only the image,but everything between you and the object. That includes imperfections on the optics, the movement of the atmosphere, and ANY movement of the scope.

3. Short eyepieces that give high mag alo have a very small field of view. So the Earth's rotation is magnified, and you've a smaller area in which to see the object.

refractor telescope - auto tracking - astrophotography?


I want to buy a refractor telescope as i having been doing some astrophotography using my DSLR and tripod but i observer that if I increase the shutter speed to more than 2 sec i get start/planets trail, now i googled and it seems auto tracking is the best solution to get longer exposure without trail, am I right? or i will face the problem there also? is auto tracking really something which i should be looking at, at this point? Please help my objective is to get long exposure without trails...Thank you in advance
I dont have a telescope yet but i do own a pair of 10-30x50mm celestron binoculars.

There is a contraption you can build to help you track with a DSLR. I personally don't recommend it, but it does work for a lot of folks. Otherwise, to do astrophotography, yes a refractor or reflector with a low f-ratio is recommended. Here is a general guide for that:

f/6 and lower would be considered fast, ideal for viewing faint nebulosity and wide field objects.

f7 to f/10 would be midrange. The compromise range, telescopes with f/ratios in this range do fairly good at both ends.

f/11 and up would be considered slow, but ideal for planetary work or studying binaries.

You would also need an equatorial mount that is not only capable of handling tracking, but also the weight of your telescope, camera (and guide scope if you use one). You will need to balance and polar align the mount so it ACCURATELY tracks your objects without giving star trails.

Just so you're aware, Astrophotography can be an expensive pursuit if you plan to do it seriously. The equipment used by serious astrophotographers runs well into the thousands of dollars. Although there are cheaper alternatives, your imaging results may look "cheap" as well. Other things to consider is if you are imaging Deep Sky Objects or planetary? Will you be processing your images (e.g. Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc.) or accepting them "as is"?

How do I get a Refractor Telescope to work?


This is a stupid question but I need help. My daughter received a Tasco Refractor Telescope. It's cheap but she is only 12. I know nothing of telescopes or how to get it to work so she can see the moon and stuff with it. I read the instructions and we still can't see anything with it. It's too blurry. I know it is my error because this is a brand new telescope. Can anyone tell me the best lenses or whatever to use to see at least the moon? (402xpower)

First off, practice using it on trees and houses that may be a few blocks away - during the day.

Second off - do *not* use the highest magnification - even very good scopes don't 'do' that high a magnification well - and the scope you have just won't come close.
Besides, high magnification isn't really the goal - its *seeing* things that is important.

So - use only the *largest* eyepiece that you have - it is probably a 25mm eyepiece (it will have the number 25 on it somewhere - it may say K25 or 25 Kellner or some such thing).

Point the scope at some easily recognizable landmark that's at least 2 blocks away. It may take a little effort to find it. If you have a 'finder-scope', you will almost certainly find that you need to adjust it so it is centered where the telescope itself is centered. Once you see something through the telescope, then start adjusting the finder-scope so its aimed correctly.

Once you have the finder-scope adjusted properly, it will make it a *lot* easier to locate the moon in the evening. Use the lowest magnification (largest eyepiece, remember) a *lot*. You will want to try to switch to a higher magnification (smaller eyepiece) - but do so gradually - you will discover that it becomes difficult to keep adjusting the scope to follow the Moon as it seems to move (because of Earth's rotation.

If at all possible, try to find a local astronomy club and go to their public viewing nights. You'll get to see a bunch of other scopes - and get to see a bunch of sights in the sky.

What eye pieces should i add to my 80mm refractor telescope?


I have a 20mm and a 12.5mm and 2x barlow

I've found the Orion Explorer II Zoom eyepiece pretty usefull...... even made my crappy Tasco thing usable.

It's handy, because you can change between using 7mm / 9mm / 11mm / 15mm / 21mm zoom without having to mess about changing eyepieces.

You may also want to consider looking at the "Orion Deepview" eyepieces
