Telescope Tripods I got an Emerson 50x100 Refractor Telescope (with Tripod 1ea) for Christmas, but everything seems so blurry?
I got an Emerson 50x100 Refractor Telescope (with Tripod 1ea) for Christmas, but everything is so blurry?
When I stand in front of my window and look through the main focal tube, I can't really see anything. It's all dark and blurry.. Am I supposed to do something to make it look more clear and precise?
Rule 1. in amateur astronomy, NEVER BUY A TELESCOPE FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE! They are nothing but frustrating pieces of junk. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. I had 2 junk scopes before I finally decided to buy a real one.
Some good stores to buy telescopes from are Orion, Celestron, and Meade. A good scope usually costs around $300. There are a few okay ones around $100, like this one http://www.telescope.com/control/telescopes/dobsonian-telescopes/orion-skyscanner-100mm-tabletop-reflector-telescope. If your willing to spend a little more money, I would recommend the
If you want to use the scope you have go ahead, but it will offer nothing but frustration and poor images. If your really interested in the hobby, look for a local astronomy club. Most big cities have them. A cheaper alternative to a telescope is a good pair of 10x50 binoculars. Good luck and clear skies!
Telescopes Mount Is it worth the extra bucks for a Orion Atlas EQ Mount?
I'm Looking at two telescope mounts, the Sirius EQ 6 and the Atlas EQ 6 both made by Orion. Plan on using the mount with a short optical tube and a DSLR camera, total about 20 lbs. mostly for astrophotography. The Atlas is about $400 more and can be used for larger telescopes, my question is the Sirius good enough for imaging? with light weight scopes? is the go to function worth the extra bucks?
Thanks.
Jim
you've got the weight about right: only use about 50% of the mount's capacity if you're doing imaging, and these mounts are rated for 40 pounds. they are nice, hefty mounts, and as long as you can physically handle them, they should do what you want.
have a look in some of the specialized forums, like cloudy nights. there is extensive discussion.
only you can decide if goto is worth the money. some ppl swear by it. others swear at it.
telescope tripod Camera tripod same as telescope tripod?
I was wondering.. is a camera tripod the same as a telescope tripod?
The principal is the same, but camera tripods have a standardized screw on top to mount all brands of cameras. Most telescope tripods are deducated to a specific telescope and won't fit your camera.
I accidently moved the setting circle dial on my telescope tripod?
does it matter?
Only if you use the setting circle. When you set up your telescope, do you orient the scope to the North Star before starting to use it? If so, then you obviously use the setting circle, if not, then you probably don't need to worry about it much. If you just use your scope to "point & shoot", then it won't be a big issue for you at all.
