Toy Telescope

What is a decent telescope for starters without breaking the bank?I don't want a toy obviously.?
There are many on line and I have set a price range but want the best bang for my buck.
If you could give an idea of your ideal price range it will help a lot here. In most cases, you do get what you pay for on telescopes, and cheap scopes will only frustrate you. Telescopes have many parts than can be made cheaply to get into a lower price point, and any of them can severely reduce their usability. As an example, a nice telescope on a cheap tripod will shake at the slightest touch and make it impossible to tell what you are looking at.
My suggestions, in the order that I think you should follow:
1. Search for a local amateur astronomy club. This is simply the best investment you can ever make - and you can usually visit a meeting or two for free. Typically you will find a group of very knowledgable people that love the hobby and love sharing it with others. You may get a chance to try out several types of telescopes to see what suits you best and discover that pros and cons of each.
2. Read a few books. Check your local library or buy one if you must. Two books I strongly recommend are a) "Nightwatch" by Terence Dickinson and b) "Turn Left at Orion" by Guy Consolmagno. Nightwatch is a general guide to beginning astronomy and also includes some good information on the types of scopes and what you might like. It also includes some nice sky maps with highlites of what to look for. Turn Left is a list of 100 night sky objects that you can see in a smaller telescope - generally a 3" or smaller. It separates the list by seasons and tells you how to locate them fairly easily.
3. Consider a pair of binoculars. You will be amazed at how much you can see through a quality pair of binoculars. Consider a 10x50 pair to start with - they are light enough to hold up and won't shake too badly in your hands. You can get started here for around $100.
4. Get a "Dobsonion" telescope. I recommend the Orion SkyQuest XT6 which you can get for around $250. This is a 6" mirror telescope mounted on a solid swivel base. This $250 scope is miles beyond anything that the famous astronomers of history ever had and you will be happy here! It's also small enough to for even a smaller person to transport and use without problem.
Best of luck!

Im looking for a microscope and telescope for a 7 year old does anyone know what i should look for?
My son wants a telescope and microscope for Christmas. I have no idea what to look for in these items. I would like to get something he can use for a while because over the last year he has had a real interest in anything science. We spend a lot of time reading different books and now he want to explore. Can someone help me everything I reading is foreign language to me. What’s a good starting price for these types of toys? What’s a ok zoom and magnification?
I find that in general kids of 7 years of age are too young to operate either a microscope or a telescope properly. Most of the toy telescopes and microscopes on the market are pure junk and will be frustrating. They are much more likely to use and enjoy something less powerful, but of good quality. I would recommend a good magnifying glass (possibly one of the kind with folding lenses of different magnifications) and/or a good binocular, 7x35 or 8x40. This is a particularly nice kit, with lots of goodies included which a 7-year-old will love:

Avoid zoom and high magnifications, as these are generally of very poor quality.
