Particle Cascade/Cascade Particle?


Could anyone give me a definition? I need to be able to understand the process of cascade particles being read by gamma ray telescopes as they hit the Earth's atmosphere and reach us. Thanks! :)

Much of the success of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy comes from detection techniques based on a single physical phenomenon. When a very high energy gamma ray (energy > 100 GeV) enters the earth's atmosphere it interacts with an atomic nucleus. This interaction initiates a cascade of subatomic particles and electromagnetic radiation. Depending on the energy of the primary gamma ray, there are a number of ways by which such cascades may be detected. For the highest energy gamma rays, the cascade may penetrate far enough into the atmosphere for the sub-atomic constituents to be detected at ground level, using particle detectors. For less energetic primaries, the cascade dies out high in the atmosphere, however such showers are still detectable via the short-pulsed Cherenkov emission of their relativistic constituents. This approach was first proposed as far back as 1958 (Morrison, 1958) and was quickly followed by extremely optimistic flux predictions, however detection of gamma radiation using ground-based experiments would prove much more difficult than frst thought

What is the best telescope for viewing planets?


I got a good budget of $1000 give or take realistically on the telescope, I want to see Planets, also would you know of any programs for Amateurs that will help you point your telescope and discover where in the skies do you find what you are looking for, I am fascinated and captivated by this, yet I am still a novice, any programs that might help or any sites, info that is useful! Thanks for the help!

For solar system work, a good fast (long focal length) telescope is needed. this helps to cut the brightness and increase the contrast of whatever it is your looking at. If you want to scope that tracks automatically (compensates for the earth's rotation), that's more expensive then one that tells you which way to push the scope, which more expensive than one you do all the work (of finding and tracking the object).

What is the best affordable telescope?


I'm looking for a telescope to star-gaze with. I'd like it to be good quality, yet also affordable (Under $200, preferably under $150). What is the best model for this?

There are only a very few telescopes worth considering in this price range -- most of the others are toys.

What makes all of these scopes stand out is their smooth solid Dobsonian-style mounts, as distinct from the wobbly tripod mounts on the competition. In this price range, slight differences in price make for major differences in quality, so concentrate on items towards the bottom of the list.

For just slightly more money you can get a 6-inch reflector on a true Dobsonian mount.

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:

I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.

Many people who buy telescopes have no idea how to find interesting things to observe. A good introduction to finding things is NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). A more advanced book is Star Watch by Phil Harrington (Wiley).

best telescope?


I'm looking for the best telescope under $200. I've been seeing people say that Meade sucks? and Orion is better?

Meade and Orion both make quality telescopes, as does Celestron.

But, Meade and Celestron both have a "economy, department store" line scopes which they offer for $200 or less and they skimp on quality to allow those who just want to "see something dammit!" without spending over $200, have a telescope. These telescopes typically have flimsy mounts and are bought by people with unrealistic expectations of what they will be able to see in the telescope.

Most of these lower end telescopes produced by Meade and Celestron are refractors or reflectors of small aperture on flimsy tripods and mounts. Orion produces a lot of Dobsonians though. These telescopes have simple but sturdy, ground based alt-azimuth mounts, are cheaper to produce, and thus can be made larger for the same price as a low end Meade or Celestron. They are easy for beginners to use and since they are larger they can see more and better meet the user's expectations. Perhaps this is why you've heard people recommend Orion.

The best telescope for under $200 depends on what you want out of it and if you want to buy it new or used. If you want to eventually do astrophotography with it you'll need something with a sturdy equatorial mount or something that comes with tracking capability already to follow the object. If you want to see a lot of galaxies you need a lot of aperture (diameter of the primary mirror or lens) and you will probably have to sacrafice astrophotography potential and buy a Dobsonian. I would not buy a refractor in your pricerange because you won't be able to afford a decently sized apochromatic one. If you buy used things are cheaper.

I recommend making of list of things you want out of the telescope and then doing some more research and going to a few star parties to try out different telescopes.

Are Celestron 21024 FirstScope Telescope good for astronomy?


I am thinking about getting a Celestron 21024 FirstScope Telescope, are they good for a new astronomer?

Depends on how easily impressed you are with seeing little objects in the scope.

At 76mm the aperture is quite small, so you won't get much light. That will limit the visual detail as you try to increase magnification. The two eyepieces, a 20mm and 4mm will get you a mere 15X and 75X magnification, fine for the Moon, but limited for Jupiter and Saturn. The ad talks about seeing galaxies and nebulae, but my experience tells me that, unless you have the clearest skies in the world, your not going to see much beyond a few ghostly shapes in the Orion, Crab and DumbBell nebulae. You might, might, might be able to get the Bode's nebulae galaxies, M81 and M82. But you'll have to know exactly where they are in the night sky to point your scope correctly.

Best bet is to find out where and when your local astronomy club is having a "public viewing night" and go several times. The members will be happy to let you look at the objects through their scopes and share with you their experiences, both good and not so good. It will help you get a handle on what you want out of a scope.....better that than to buy something that quickly finds its way into the closet because it doesn't give you the enjoyment you had hoped for.
