Help with equatorial mount (telescope)?
I am having some trouble with using a polar aligned equatorial mounted telescope. I understand how to polar align, and i understand how to change the declination to view a certain objects declination, yet i do not understand how exactly the RA disc is supposed to work. The RA disc does not rotate with the telescope, so when i go to change the RA that the telescope is pointing at, the disc does not move and i have no clue what my coordinates are, and i cannot find the object. I know i could always just scan the entire RA since I know the declination, but it just seems to time consuming. My slow motion cables also get in the way while i am changing the coordinates. Help?
I completely disagree with GeoffG here - serious amateurs use their setting circles a lot. NOT using them tends to be the sign of a newbie. Relying on one single technique to locate objects is a bad idea, especially when there are many targets that are virtually impossible to star hop to since they are too far from any bright or distinctive stars. Having said that, it is true that the setting circles on many low end scopes leave a lot to be desired but they are still vastly prefereable to none at all since even poor setting circles used well should get the target you are looking for somewhere in the field of a low power eyepeice.
The thing to realise is that on amateur scopes the RA dial does not keep itself updated, even with a motor drive. This is different to the declination axis which is set at the factory and you can leave alone. Start on one star with a known RA and set the RA dial to the correct figure. Then move the scope until you have the target RA straight away. After ten minutes the RA reading will be wrong sicne it will not have kept track of the Earth's rotation so you'll need to reset it again before moving on to a new location. This may sound cumbersome but it soon becomes largely automatic when you know what you are doing.

The Equatorial Mount
is this telescope any good DynaSun Genuine dynasun equatorial telescope 114x900?
im looking at buying a telescope ? im a novice, but i dont want to waste my money on a toy ! this is advertised in the area of £130 on a website ? is this good or am i wasting my time ? i dont want to spend a fortune on some thing designed for profesionals, just a decent scope for a beginer,
This is a typical "Christmas trash telescope": bought as a Christmas gift, ends up in the trash by New Year's. Small mirror, shaky, hard-to-use mount, unknown maker. Don't waste your money on it.
The same money will buy you a a SkyWatcher Heritage 130P: a larger mirror on a solid smooth easy-to-use Dobsonian mount from a major telescope manufacturer. This telescope received an excellent review from Terence Dickinson in SkyNews magazine:
http://www.opticalvision.co.uk/astronomical_telescopes/sky-watcher/dobsonians
For just slightly more money you can get a 6-inch reflector on a true Dobsonian mount.
Here are a few web pages with good information on beginner's telescopes:
http://www.gaherty.ca/tme/TME0702_Buying_a_Telescope.pdf
http://www.scopereviews.com/begin.html
http://observers.org/beginner/j.r.f.beginner.html
For more advanced information, read Phil Harrington's Star Ware, 4th edition (Wiley).
You'll get the greatest value for your money with a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount, such as these:
http://www.telescope.com/control/category/~category_id=dobsonians/~pcategory=telescopes/~VIEW_INDEX=0/~VIEW_SIZE=1000000
http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/swtinc/product.php?class1=1&class2=106
Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:
http://www.skyandtelescope.com/community/organizations
I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.
Many people who buy telescopes have no idea how to find interesting things to observe. A good introduction to finding things is NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). A more advanced book is Star Watch by Phil Harrington (Wiley).
