Did Edwin Hubble invent his own telescope?


I found the following statement online:

"Astronomer Edwin Hubble built one of the biggest of them all, measuring 100 inches in mirror diameter. His Mount Wilson reflector telescope made one of the biggest discoveries in astronomy of all time"

I Know that the Hubble Space Telescope was named in his honor but did he contribute to any advancements with telescopes? Did he only use telescopes, or did he improve them also?

Edwin Hubble's most important contribution is the Hubble constant which measures the rate at which the celestial objects such as stars and galaxise drift apart from each other.

But I don't think he did anything with optics to improve telescopes he was an astronomer visionary .

I like astronomy, what telescope should I get?


I hear refractors are only good for looking planets, but reflectors are good for only observing galaxies. I want to do both. should i get the Schmidt cassegrain(SCT) because it has the best of both. what do you think. I don't have much money though I only have a $100.

Well, ..., my advice to you is as follows:
1) Put you money in the bank or into a high yield mutual fund and save your money until you have enough to buy a decent scope.
2) A Schmidt-Cassegrain is going to run you a good deal of money (including the mount).
3) Don't waste you money buying cheap store bought scopes they are worthless.
4) Read the right-up below on how to chose a first scope.

For more advice I would suggest that you contact your local astronomy club. You don't have to own a telescope to join! Joining your local astronomy club is the best way to nurture your passion for astronomy. Plus, you'll find that they'll be able to provide you lots of great advice and support for acquiring and operating a telescope.

Now the best pricing for a decent first scope that I can suggest is a Dobsonian scope with a 6" or 8" mirror from Orion (e.g. Orion XT6 - $279 or XT8 - $329.95).

The two dobsonians I suggested are great visual beginner scopes and are super for just taking out to the backyard for casual observing but will definitely hold their own at any amateur astronomy gathering. They are also easy for young people to use and operate. You can do short exposure astrophotography with them but not long exposure astrophotography (for that you need a lot more money - See "Astrophotograpphy for Web Cams - Robert Reeves").

The Dobsonian scope will be much more durable, of higher quality, and you'll be able to see all of the Messier deep sky objects (DSO's) plus many of the brighter NCG DSO's, many many stars plus: Mercury, Venus, Earth's Moon, Mars, Jupiter and it's moons, Saturn, its rings and moons, Uranus, Neptune and the dwarf planet Pluto, as well as, many of the minor planets, comets, and asteroids. Additionally, it's easy to transport, setup, and use (under 60 seconds from car to ground ... no kidding).

Bottom Line: any scope with less than a 6" mirror with a 1200mm focal length, IMHO, would be a waste of money. See the links below for low priced dobsonian scopes with 6" and 8" mirrors. However, the larger the aperture (size of primary objective ... like an 6", 8", 10", 12" mirror or larger) the better. Also, there are many brands of dobsonian scopes made by many different companies that you can choose from. I only offered these as examples because they are popular with our club members.

Look at the links to the www.telescope.com site that I've provided below and you'll find that they do have quite a selection of standard, push-to, goto dobsonian scopes that could fit your needs.

Digital camera pictures through telescope?


How can I take pictures through my telescope with my Canon PowerShot S3?

While cameras of this type are not generally recommended for astrophotography. There is a native shutter limit of 15 seconds. However here's a link that helps over come that limit -

what do i do? the telescoping lens on my digital camera got pushed in while on?


my camera accidently turned on in my pocket, (lens telescopes out in "on" position) and i sat on it pushing the lens in. where can i get the blue prints?

talk to the camera manufacturer, they should be able to help.
Might even be able to get warranty service for it if it was a pricey camera.

Can anyone recommend a telescope that is decent for astrophotography?


Preferably under $420 or so... Any brand is fine.

Please be sure the scope AND the mount are included.

for that price, forget it. build a barndoor tracker and take widefield pictures.

please do some research on this. your expectations are totally unrealistic.

later: i do some decent astrophotography, and the telesscope i use cost as much as a nice used car. the mount i use wih it cost as much as a basic used car. you don't need to spend that much on a telesscope (a schmidt-cassegrain will do), but you *must* have a steady mount, and that costs $$$. mine is a losmandy g-11.

you also need experience. you can't buy your way in.

i plan to buy a telescope for deepspace astrophotography. which one is good?


i m amateur astronomer and plan to buy a telescope for deep space astrophotography. i m jz confused. i dont even have any contact of any experienced person. i have a budget upto Rs.20000. somebody please help me and please provide me some technical information about telescope.

You need to contact a local astronomy club and attend their "public viewing" nights for a while. Ask questions, take notes, Most all the members will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you, and you get to look through their equipment and see for yourself how telescopes perform. Don't believe the advertising hype about scopes with small apertures. Aperture is the first and foremost thing you need to get a lot of, if you want to see deep-space objects. More light-gathering aperture will allow for better pictures.

Word of caution: Astrophotography can be expensive.

If the photographic plate records 5 percent of the light reaching it, and the CCD records 90 percent, how much time will the new system take to collect as much information as the old detector recorded in a 3 hr exposure?

Have you already got the camera or are you thinking of buying one.

Astronomy cameras come ready to drop straight into the eyepiece hole, you point the Telescope at a target, remove the eyepiece and drop the camera in the hole.

If you own a compact camera or a DSLR you will need a suitable adapter
