Beginner Telescopes
Is this a good beginner telescope?
Its a: Sky-Watcher 153mm (6'') Dobsonian Telescope
It has two eyepieces: 25mm and 10mm (not sure what for)
The magnification isnt listed but i think it can be figured out through the eyepieces. Is the 25mm for sky and 10mm for land??
It costs $300.
Is this good for a beginner that wants to look at the moon and the planets in detail?? I'm not that crazy about the stars and galaxies.
For a beginner? Good scope. You could do a *lot* worse. The focal length of the eye pieces coupled with the focal length of the mirror will tell you what magnification you will get using the eye piece.
Your scope has a focal length of 1200 mm. If you divide the focal length of the scope by the focal length of the eye piece you have the magnification. So, 1200 / 25 = 48. 1200 / 10 = 120. So, you will have powers of 48 and 120 (often written 48x and 120x).
48x is good for finding things, and looking at relatively large, but dim objects. For example, the Andomeda galaxy covers way more of the sky than the moon does, but no one notices it because it is so dim. You 48x is good for this object.
You 120x will be good for objects that are fairly small and bright. So, the plants and the moon are good candidates for this eye piece. So are double stars.
The dobsonian mount is a very good choice because it is easy to set up and use. However, it offers you a challenge which, if you will meet it, will greatly increase your enjoyment. You will *have* to learn to star hop. That is, since there are no setting circles or goto mechanism, you will have to learn what the sky looks like, and where things are. You want to see Neptune? Your 6" dob will show it to you easily; but you will have to find it. You'll need a good star chart and then learn the skills necessary to hunt it down. Trust me, if you work at it you will want a bigger and bigger dobsonian telescope!
One more thing...you will never see in your eye piece anything that compares to the best photo images. Your eye is simply not sensitive enough. So, do not be disappointed with what you see. Do know, however, that if you can find Neptune, or even Uranus, you will see an object that very few humans have seen with their own eyes. That should send chills up your spine!
