how do you align the setting circles on an equatorial mount for a telescope?


Whenever I try to use the setting circles to locate and object in the sky I get something that is either in the other direction or at the ground.

I assume you mean manual setting circles and not a computerized pointing system. I googled "setting circles" to get the source. And below are some pointers of my own.

The most important step is to make sure your polar axis is pointed directly at the celestial pole. For a portable telescope this will have to be adjusted every time you set up the telescope.

Then the DEC circle has to read exactly 0 when the telescope is pointed at the celestial equator and 90 when it is pointed at the pole. Once set it never needs changing again.

Then the RA circle has to be adjusted to match local sidereal time. The easiest way to do that is point the telescope at a known star and just adjust the RA circle to read the correct value. After that, unless you have a clock driven RA circle that keeps moving the RA circle at one revolution per day for you, it will be off by 1 minute for every minute since you last adjusted it and you will need to adjust it all the time during the night. The easiest way is, just before moving on to another object,manually set it back to the correct value for the object your are looking at now and then move to the new location right away.

Do you mean a mount for your telescope, or a mount to attach the camera to the telescope? If you mean for your telescope, I would need to know what telescope you own. I would also need to know this for a camera mount.

The Canon Rebel DSLR is a good entry-level camera for astrophotography.

Because of the vagueness of your question, I suspect that you have no idea what is required to do astrophotography. I recommend you do some reading, such as the chapters on astrophotography in Dickinson and Dyer's Backyard Astronomer's Guide (Firefly).

What would be a good quality telescope to buy?


I have always been interested in our night sky and watch tons of scientific shows based on anything to do with the stars. For a long time I have wanted to buy a telescope but have been afraid of investing too much money on not enough quality. I am not looking to invest a huge amount but wonder how much I can realistically expect. I would like to see some extras, ie: rings or notice the shadow of rings, more detail on our moon, some other moons... Can anyone give me a 'scope' (pun intended) on what I can get my hands on for say $150 - $250. Or if I can stay on the lower range and get what I am hoping for, what could I expect with the higher end of my price range?

I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.

I suspect that this is asking you to calculate the diffraction limit for a 1.5m aperture, in which case it would be 0.085 arcseconds - the diffraction limit is inversely proportional to aperture (see Wikipedia's page on angular resolution for precise formulae). However for real world telescopes that is only one limit even given perfect optics. Atmospheric conditions fundamentally limit the resolution that can be obtained from larger scopes and such scopes are said to be seeing rather than diffraction limited. The changeover between the two where both are equal is generally held to be at the 8" (200mm) point although the precise figure depends on atmospheric conditions at the time. If we put in 0.2m in the same formula we get a figure of 0.64 arcseconds. Earth based scopes larger than 8" do not get better resolution as a result, but they still collect more light and are able to view or image fainter objects.

I have a Sony DSH 5 digital camera, need help in taking a picture of the Moon.?


I have a Sony DSH 5 digital camera, and would like help with what settings to use to take a picture of a full moon. My goal is to take a good picture of the moon, have tried flowers and scenery and people now would like to try to take a picture of the moon, but have no luck so far. Please if anyone could help me with the settings, I know I will need a tripod and also, would like to use the camera settings, do not have any extra lens at this time, but I know it can be done with the camera's setting. Please help and if anyone is interested in emailing with ideas of picture taking let me know. Please advise. Thanks!

What type of picture are you talking about? Do you want to have the moon as part of the night sky and include the contrast and some detail of the sky (only possible on certain very clear nights). Or do you want to zoom in on the moon and cause the background to fade out of the picture.

Use a tripod for both pictures. There are three settings to work with....ISO, aperature, and shutter speed. All non SLR cameras have alot of noise when taking night shots, so set the ISO to 160 or at least as low as 200. If you want to take a picture of the moon in the night sky, use a very slow shutter speed. If you want the moon to stand out from the background, use a moderately slow shutter speed and open up the aperature.

I'm not familiar with the H5 controls but I own the R1. The R1 allows me to set a"priority" for my automatic controls by setting the mode switch. If the H5 has one, try using the twilight setting (moon in the night sky) or twilight portrait setting (focussed in on the moon). If those are absent or don't work well, use the priority modes. S will allow you to set the shutter speed and the camera will auto adjust the other settings to get the correct exposure. Set the ISO as low as it will go and the shutter speed as high as it will go. Thise should work well because you are using a tripod and the moon is a stationary object. Alternately, you could use the A mode which will allow you to adjust the aperature and let more light in. Set the F number as small as it will go (which opens the aperature maximally). The camera should auto select the other settings to get the correct exposure. Opening up the aperature will cause the focal range to become much smaller. The net result is the moon will become focussed while the surrounding night sky will go out of focus, throwing the moon into sharp contrast.
