How to I find all the Messier Objects in my orion skyquest XT10? Is that a good telescope?? ?
Should I buy a new telescope? I thought I would be able to see all kinds of stuff, so far nothing. I need to learn all the 88 cons... I really want to see all the Messier Objects & know which one im looking at when I do find one.. And Why cant I see the great red spot on jupiter?? Do I have a sorry telescope or something?
My xt10 is awesome. It took me about two years to spot all the Messier objects.
You only need to learn all 88 constellations if you live on the equator. I don't need to learn Centaurus because it never comes above my southern horizon. I wouldn't even know it existed if it weren't for something interesting there - the closest star to us other than the Sun.
The Red spot is actually white just now. Sky & Telescope has a predictor page on their web site for when to look. I just saw it in my xt10 recently for the first time. It was a particularly steady night. To be honest, i don't study Jupiter that often. But i was observing with someone who does, and pointed it out. It wasn't at all what i might have looked for. She didn't set up her 14.5" - it takes too long. But it's only 2 or 3 minutes for the xt10. Another reason the xt10 is a great scope. Jupiter rotates once around in 10 hours. The Red spot is centered for maybe an hour or two at a time.
I've also seen Pluto in my xt10. You need a great finder chart. And then, since it's just a dot, you really need to draw what you see, and check again another night, to see it move.
Check out a local club. Observe with others with some experience. Everyone has something to teach you.

Meade Telescope
Can anyone help me find some information on a Meade model 323 telescope. I have searched but have come up with
nothing. I would appreciate your help, thank you.

Meade mass produce reasonable small telescopes, and this could be ok as a first telescope, but in my experience the mount, tripod and finder let this down badly, and can be frustrating to use. The OTA is ok, but that is all. The F11 is quite a long f number, and it will be difficult to keep steady as it will shake like a leaf. The finder will not assist much because it is too small (5mm)- should be 10x50 really.
I would reccomend getting an f8 maximum and a decent mount/tripod/finder. Celestron do some better ones, like the Onyx.
So I would give it a 5/10. Depends on your budget really.

Telescope modifications?
I have an Orion XT12i and i was wondering what modifications i could make to it or any accessories i could add to it. It has been cloudy for the past few days and the forecast doesn't show any signs of clearing so i need something to do to hold me over. If you own a Dobsonian telescope what have you done to it?

somebody said this was good for first time buyers is it a good scope? also is there a smaller version of this scope for a cheeper price ? and what are the magnifications on this thing (50x,100x) ?

There is a 4.5" one that's a little lower in cost, but unless you really need something super portable and light weight, you'll be better served by getting the 6" one, even if it means you've got to wait a little longer.
A 6" scope will gather 77% more light than a 4.5" one. That's significant.
The magnification will depend on the eyepieces you use. The scope comes with a 25mm eyepiece that will give you 48 power. You can buy extra eyepieces to get higher or lower magnification.
I'd consider getting a 32mm plossl eyepiece as the first accessory - it'll give you lower power, but it'll also allow you to see more sky at once so it'll be easier to find things. As a third eyepiece, I'd look for something around 12mm.
Some people recommend barlow lenses as accessories. Personally, I am not impressed with the optical quality of reasonably priced barlows and feel you'd be better off buying an extra eyepiece.
When you're on a tight budget, the Orion Dobs are a very good place to start.
Also - you should look for a local astronomical society and visit them while you're saving up for your scope. You'll get to look through their scopes for free, and it's possible one of the members might have an xt6 or a similar scope you can try before you actually make your purchase.
